The mechanisms which enable photoreceptors to use radiation as a source of energy or information have traditionally been studied separately in different groups of organisms. As a result the structural similarities between these essential molecules in a wide range of species of both plants and animals have, to a great extent, been overlooked.
In this book, current knowledge in the area is summarized, and recent research into the parallel evolution of photoreceptors in bacteria, algae, fungi, higher plants, arthropods, fish, birds, and mammals is discussed, providing a fascinating insight into the ways in which organisms have developed specific photoreceptors to fulfill their individual requirements.
