About the Author
Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis were collaborators for over forty years who transformed the world's understanding of dance theater. A pioneer of mixed-media performances, Nikolais began his own dance company in 1948. Louis, originally the company's lead dancer, led their school and with Nikolais developed a new technique for teaching dance. They created dozens of visual masterpieces and have influenced generations of young dancers. Nikolais, awarded a Kennedy Center National Medal of Honor in 1987, died in 1993. Louis has written two previous books on dance as well as a monthly column for Dance Magazine. He has lectured and toured throughout the world and continues to serve as artistic director of the Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis Dance Company.
