Book Description
GENERAL CHEMISTRY INTERACTIVE CD-ROM complements the one- or two-term general chemistry course. Developed by William J. Vining (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), John C. Kotz (State University of New York, Oneonta), and Patrick Harman, GENERAL CHEMISTRY INTERACTIVE CD-ROM is one of the most successful pieces of science education software ever published. The basis of this dynamic and proven teaching and learning tool is that students learn by doing. Technology can now be used to enhance student learning and efficiency by directly leading them to think and explore through interactive computer-based exercises. This unique interactive multimedia program is available packaged with any Brooks/Cole general chemistry text (at a significant discount) or as a stand-alone item.

About the Author
Professor William Vining is a leader in educational software production and implementation in chemistry. He has produced major CD-ROM products for General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Allied Health Chemistry. Dr. Vining received his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York, College at Oneonta and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. After spending three years in industry and eight years as a faculty member at Hartwick College with two years as Department Chair, he accepted a position as Associate Professor of Chemical Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

While at UMass, Professor Vining's group has produced software for major publishers as well as programs published in chemical education journals and through museums covering such topics as chromatography, zeolites, polymers, and crystal energetics. His research and production group at UMass is an interesting mix of chemists, ranging from postdoctoral associates to undergraduates, and multimedia programming and design professionals. This synergy provides a unique environment where professional quality learning tools can be developed with minute-by-minute input from potential users: undergraduate students.

Professor Vining's first love is teaching. He makes extensive use of computer-based simulations to teach classes via a "discovery process." In addition to teaching classes and running his research group, he is also the Director of the General Chemistry Program at UMass. In 2000, Dr. Vining was awarded the university's highest teaching honor, the UMass Distinguished Teaching Award. John C. Kotz, a State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta, was educated at Washington and Lee University and Cornell University. He held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at UMIST in England and at Indiana University.

He has coauthored three textbooks in several editions (Inorganic Chemistry, Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, and The Chemical World) and the General Chemistry Interactive CD-ROM. He has also published on his research in organometallic chemistry and electrochemistry.

John was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Lisbon, Portugal in 1979 and a Visiting Professor there in 1992. In 1991-1992 he was a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin) and in 1999 was an Overseas Visitor at Auckland University in New Zealand.

He has received several awards, among them a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 1998 Estee Lecturership in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota, the 1999 Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society, and, in 2001, the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (NY) Section of the American Chemical Society.
