Cellulose represents a very important source of renewable raw material. The degree of order defined by the degree of 'crystallinity' and the 'crystalline orientation' has for a long time been considered to be the main structural factor influencing the accessibility and chemical reactivity of cellulose. The influence of defined morphological elements setting up the fiber structure has too often been ignored. The aim of this book is to bring together accepted concepts on the molecular structure, fine structure and morphology of cellulose and to examine the interrelation between the structure and the accessibility and reactivity of fibrous cellulose substrates.
Hans A. Krässig joined Lenzing Aktiengesellschaft, a leading manufacturer of viscose staple fibers, in 1966 as director of research and development. He retired from this position in 1982 and taught fiber science at the Technical University of Vienna and the Plastics Division of Leoben Montan-University until 1989.
