As with the term 'microelectronics', the term 'microphotonics' includes submicron processing and structures. Processing on a nanometer scale and characterization of highly resolved structures on an atomic scale are an essential part of the overall development of microphotonics which goes beyond the limits of presently used devices and circuits.  Microphotonics focuses on the miniaturization of photonic components and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). This is important, because, as in the development of microelectronics, the reduction of feature size of PICs results in increased throughput of optical data at reduced power consumption, reduced absorption losses and concomitantly improved reliability. This book provides an overview of the materials chemistry and engineering basis of microphotonics. It aims at providing professionals with essential information from this rapidly evolving area of multidisciplinary research.
