'Dr Lopes brings the reader into an intimate encounter with one of the most powerful and destructive forces on our planet, the active volcano. Her easy writing style takes us from the molten core of the Earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. Each page is full of personal knowledge and observations, along with excellent tips on how to survive being around one of these lethal beasts. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the awesome forces of nature and off-the-beaten-trail adventures.' Ralph White, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and The Explorers Club, National Geographic cameraman, and past-president of The Adventurers' Club
'This beautifully illustrated book is a good rough guide to nature's rough stuff. Read the eight rules for visiting volcanos and the fiverules for surviving eruptions ('watch out for steam and methane explosions'), then choose your volcano ... Her book visits at least 25 volcanos ... and supplies practical advice and eye-popping stories about every one.' The Guardian
