From the Back Cover
ISO 14001 is the new international environmental management standard. This book contains the most recent information about the standard, including all its final modifications. Its purpose is to do for environmental control what ISO 9000 has done for quality management, and is currently a very hot topic with all major manufacturing companies. The likelihood is that as with ISO 9000 the initial uptake from larger organizations will lead to pressure upon suppliers and business partners (including customers!) to join in as well, and insist upon compliance from their suppliers.
The purpose of this book is to outline the scope and purpose of the standard and make it accessible to everyone. This would be anyone from the SHE (Safety, Health and Environmental) manager of a large multinational to the MD or QA manager of an SME comprising no more than a few employees but doing business with those larger companies. The marketing value of certification will also lead to a much wider take-up than those organizations which actually need the systems. The book will lead the reader through the theory and implementation of an ISO 14001-compliant environmental management system, including the consultant's and auditor's perspective, and give case studies from industries which have actually undergone the process. Finally, there is input from certification and accreditation bodies that will help with trouble-shooting and assessment. An examination of the likely future of the whole subject rounds off the book, including the potential role of the European 'sub-set' of ISO 14001 - EMAS - and what chance it has of international adoption.
