Paperback. Understanding and predicting changes within the Earth's atmosphere and oceans requires observations over a very large range of time and spatial scales. Only observations from Earth-orbiting satellites offer such information on the global scale. In view of the importance of predictions of weather and climate to human activities, it is important to examine the progress made in the application of satellite data to weather forecasting, climate prediction and climate model validation.
