As Dreamed by Itsy is an unbelievable but wonderful science series for 5 - 8 year olds. Who would believe titles like Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Chemical Bonding, or Atomic Physics? My kids loved the stories, and I learned a lot of science too. Had science books in school been this good, I might be wearing a lab coat today.
All books follow the same format. Itsy, a little girl (girl + science = great idea) sees exciting things happening and really gets interested. Something happens and she wakes - it was all a dream. The things Itsy saw in her dream lets her mother quickly explain how Itsy's dream showed a scientific theory. How's that? Exciting dream, beautiful images, reduces science to kids' understanding with no pain.
The illustrations are interesting - simple colored line drawings go along with the story line, helping the kid visualize and maintain interest by showing Itsy doing something in every drawing. The format is a page of text and an illustration on the opposite page. The stories and illustrations came about when a scientist started telling his grandchildren stories about science. I could just see him sketching the illustrations on a pad as he talked.
Had the author left off the mother bit, I'd have thought the stories were just to entertain kids and would never have dreamed they are about science. That's my way of saying the books are great stories that happen to include a science education.
Book Description
Itsy dreams about earth before it had an atmosphere. She watches as volcanos, sun, and weather create the atmosphere and the seeds of life. She sees life start in the seas from chemicals lightning created in the atmosphere. She learns about plants having to come first and put oxygen into the air before animals could live. Itsy observes as single cells become plants and slowly evolve into large animals. Upon awakening, she learns that her dream is just how scientists think life came about on earth.
