Paleoceanography is a new science dealing with the history of the oceans. This book describes what we have found out during the last decade about the past 100 million years of the history of the South Atlantic Ocean, thanks largely to drilling by Glomar Cballenger during five expeditions in 1980. Palaeotemperature studies have provided us with a history of climatic variations. Geochemistry of carbon isotopes has provided information on fertility of planktonic organisms and on intensity of oceanic overturns. Correlation of sediment character to changes in oceanic chemistry and fertility has permitted interpretations of the variation of the level at which fossil skeletons became dissolved. All the authors are experts in their respective fields of specialization and almost all took part in the 1980 expeditions to the South Atlantic. The book brings together the results of the major discoveries in one volume. This volume's the first modern regional synthesis of ocean history, and it serves as a methodological model for studies of the world's other oceans.
