This book presents a developmental hypothesis that can be integrated into the modern synthesis of evolutionary theory. The author proposes a hierarchical model of the causal structure of development and its genetic control--the morphogenetic tree--and supports it through recent work on the genetic control of development in Drosophila. Discussed are evolutionary implications of the model (including a possible mechanism for von Baer's Law), relations between morphogenetic tree theory and other schools of thought in evolutionary biology, and how morphogenetic tree theory may be tested by comparing theoretical predictions with biological data.
