Book Description
The focus of this book is on using data and spreadsheet models effectively for the analysis of business problems and decision making. Included are discussions of building good spreadsheet models; data collection, visualization, and statistical analysis; forecasting; optimization using Excel Solver; decision and risk analysis; and simulation using Crystal Ball add-in for Excel and Arena BE. The principal focus is on gaining insight and intuition for better decisions, with applications in operations planning, finance, and marketing.
About the Author
Jeffrey D. Camm is Professor of Quantitative Analysis and Head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management at the University of Cincinnati. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he earned a BS in Mathematics from Xavier University and Ph.D. in Management Science from Clemson University. He has been at the University of Cincinnati for 15 years, and was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in 1992.
Professor Camm has published over 20 papers in a variety of journals in the general area of applied optimization. In 1987 he was the recipient of the Harold Grilliot Award for the promotion of outstanding faculty/student relations and in 1995 he received the UC MBA Excellence in Teaching Award. An avid runner, in 1989 he ran a personal best 2 hours 29 minutes at the Columbus, OH Marathon.
Dr. Camm has served as an operations research consultant to a number of organizations including Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, The United States Air Force, Ernst and Young Performance Improvement, Cinergy Inc., Louisville Gas & Electric, and Owens Corning. James R. Evans is Professor of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management, and Director of the Total Quality Management Center in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati. He received BSIE and MSIE degrees from Purdue, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Professor Evans has published over 70 refereed journal articles and many conference proceedings papers, and is author or co-author of over a dozen books in the areas of quality management and control, management science, operations management, creative thinking, and mathematics.
He serves on several editorial boards of research journals and is a Fellow in and was 1997-98 President of the Decision Sciences Institute. He has also been active in the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science and the Institute of Industrial Engineers, having served as Cincinnati Chapter President and national Director of the Operations Research Division.
Professor Evans has done applied operations research for several companies, was a finalist in the INFORMS Franz Edelman Competition, and schedules umpires for The American Baseball League. He has served as an Examiner and Senior Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from 1994 through 1999; judge for the Ohio Manufacturer's Association Case Studies in Team Excellence Competition since 1996; and Chair of the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati in 1997-1998.
